Art and Propaganda

Not many of the Nicaraguans we met were interested in talking politics. However, posters of President Daniel Ortega were everywhere. There was even a park near our hotel dedicated to Ortega's warm friendship with Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.

These pink billboards, with the slogan "Catholic, Socialist, Solidarity," were put up for a bygone election and never taken down. People seem to regard them as an ego trip for their leader. They are too busy just hustling to make a living.
Reminders of the "war" are everywhere. I saw this poster in the town square in San Juan del Sur where schoolkids were playing. It shows gun-toting rebels with the slogan, "We will never be defeated."

Our trip to Nicaragua was over much too quickly. I can't say enough about the kindness of the people we met. We never felt unsafe. Go and experience this fascinating country for yourself.

Update: It's been pointed out to me that I haven't mentioned how vigilant we were about being aware of our surroundings and watching out for each other. I assume anyone visiting Nicaragua on their own would use common sense and do the same.
